117. Managing Up
Managing up is managing the relationship with your boss — developing and cultivating a productive working relationship with your boss. It is an opportunity to learn your boss's management, leadership and communication styles and preferences. This, in turn, will help you learn about your own work and communication style preferences. Many people see this as a political game or an attempt to flatter their boss. There are probably some people who do manage up that way, but that doesn’t have to be what you do. I want you to see that managing up can be a positive for you and very beneficial for your career.
In this episode:
What does managing up mean?
The benefits of managing up to your boss and other influential leaders.
Pay attention to how you talk about your team members.
What you can gain through these conversations.
Potential topics to discuss in meetings with your boss.
What do you do when your boss doesn’t have time to meet with you?
Tips you can use when your boss isn’t supporting you.
Managing up can make a huge difference in your career.

116. Your Leadership Impact
Leaders have a choice of how to spend their time each day but they have a hard time letting go of doing things that aren’t adding as much value. It comes down to looking at the impact that they are making. If they aren’t focused on the high value things, then they may need to build stronger boundaries and systems to get everything done but it allows them to spend time on what is important. I know some leaders who get little to no time with their managers and although they are getting through it, that isn’t ideal. So let’s spend some time today talking about leadership impact.
In this episode:
Story of the impact that a leader made on someone in his career.
What makes the difference for you when someone treats you well as a leader?
The qualities of emotional intelligent leaders.
How can you make a difference for your team members?
What you can do for team members to help retain them.
How you can make a difference for someone each day.
What you can do to help develop your team members so they can grow.
You get an opportunity to make an impact on someone every day.

113. Value Yourself
In today’s episode, we are talking about valuing yourself. The internal belief that you know what you have to offer and standing up for it to anyone and everyone without apology.
Every single day I meet with people who feel like they aren't enough. They have thoughts running through their heads that tell them other people are better, smarter and know more. They may recognize that these thoughts are happening, but they don't understand how these thoughts impact their behavior. This kind of thinking impacts everything that they do. They hold themselves back, play small and these thoughts prevent themselves from reaching their potential. This leads these individuals to undervalue themselves and the strengths that they have to offer.
In this episode:
Challenging others in conversation isn’t something we were taught to do.
Walking through an example of a person who took the advice of her manager instead of trusting herself.
Some of the reasons why people don’t feel valued by others.
Moving away from negative self-talk to see the value that you bring.
Examples of some famous people who trusted themselves in times of difficulty.
What to do to build more trust in yourself.
The impact that visibility, self-trust and value in yourself can have on you.
How a visibility impact assessment can help you.

112. Strategic Communication
In today’s episode, we are going to talk about strategic communication.
What I mean by that is the type of conversation where you are trying to influence someone to do something or align with you on what you want to do. However you need to plan this out strategically, you can’t just wing it if you want it to go well.
Think about a few different things when you are planning a conversation that involves a big program, project, organizational changes, new strategy or alignment. To have success in these conversations, you need to look at the person first. It will help you plan for it and actually execute it in a better way.
In this episode:
Plan out your conversations strategically using some key questions that help you position the conversation in the best way to get results.
If you want to get a yes from the person you are influencing, you need to plan out the conversation in advance.
What do you know about the person or persons that you need to meet with?
Think about what you need from them.
How will you position the conversation?
What do you do post-meeting?
This type of conversation can provide a great deal of visibility for you and planning it out ensures that the conversation will be well received so you get great feedback and are thought of for future opportunities.

111. What Are You Tolerating?
Thursday Apr 18, 2024
Thursday Apr 18, 2024
111. What Are You Tolerating?
On this episode we are talking about the things that you are tolerating, how it impacts your energy and your opportunities to do more in your career and life. To give you some context about what I mean, here are some examples of tolerations: things in your life or work environment that are irritating, people who don’t treat you right, and situations that frustrate you.
What is a toleration, you ask? These are the things that stress you out every day, but they haven’t caused you enough “pain” to make a change to them yet. Why is this important? They take your energy away, which can make you feel negative, irritated, skeptical or even angry. That prevents you from being your best self for you, your family, friends, and co-workers. People can feel those negative emotions from you. It can impact how others perceive you and impact opportunities for success.
In this episode:
Walked through an example of something very common that you might be tolerating.
Reviewed examples of the different types of tolerations you may want to consider eliminating.
What do you do when you are tolerating a bad manager or workplace?
What does holding on to negative situations do to you?
How can you let negativity go?
Example of how taking things personally can break relationships.
Choosing your response when things go wrong can make all the difference.
What are you carrying around that you need to let go of?
