70. Becoming a Leader
Today’s episode is focused on becoming a leader of a team or even taking over a team. It is very exciting when it happens to you. Leadership isn’t something that people are immediately good at when they get the title. It takes time to figure out who you are and what you stand for. Having a strong leadership foundation is great way to start, but then what? You can take every class there is, but this is about going through situations and dealing with both great things that happen and also the things that are more challenging.
In this episode:
Leadership doesn’t come naturally for everyone.
Doubts, limiting beliefs and impostor syndrome can get in the way.
The importance of the first 90 days in a new role – where do you focus?
Learning how to advocate for yourself and your team.
Stepping up as a leader whether you are ready or not.
Are you managing your boundaries or trying to do everything?
Make sure you aren’t letting opportunities pass you by.

69. The Power of Words
Today’s episode is focused on the power that your words have in an organization and as a leader. What you say can have a positive effect on someone, and the opposite is also true. What type of message do you want to send to others in conversations, meetings and presentations? Consider the importance of the words that you use so that you are seen, heard and respected.
In this episode:
The article written by Scott Mabry called "The Words You Leave Behind" was the catalyst for this topic of the podcast. What are the words that you use and are they painting the portrait that you want to paint about yourself for others?
Organizations have words that are unique to the culture and the workplace.
Leaders communicate via the words that they use every day – but what message are they sending?
A deeper look at what can drive a leader’s communication and the power that they have simply by what they say.
A look at “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Freedom” by Don Miguel Ruiz and Peter Coyote and how it plays into understanding the words and actions that you take.
Tips on how you can frame what you say in the best way for your perception.

68. Creating a Better Workplace
Today’s episode is focused on the state of the workplace in 2023. Gallup has published a report based on over 120,000 leaders globally and their responses to various survey questions on engagement, stress, workplace locations and what they need from their managers. There are quite a few interesting statistics that came out of the report, and I discuss my thoughts on some of the results.
In this episode:
Global and North America Engagement scores are shared and although Gallup feels they are strong; I was surprised at the numbers.
The three types of engagement categories that Gallup identifies and uses for the purposes of their survey and which ones had the highest percentage.
The percentage of people who have stress in the workplace and how that impacts engagement.
The impact of leadership and management on an organization’s engagement.
How is the choice of where people are working now impact engagement?

67. Empowering Yourself to Make a Career Transition
Today’s episode is focused on how to make the decision for yourself on whether or not to make a career transition. I think that we all consider leaving when we are having a bad day, but how many people actually do it? Sometimes these decisions are thrust upon us (layoffs, reorganizations, etc), but we always have the choice to make these decisions for ourselves. How do you make this decision though?
In this episode:
I share a bit about how I made the decision to transition away from my company and then decided to start my own company.
Share a story of a client who struggled so much she didn’t want to get out of bed in the morning to go to work and was miserable...what she did to make her decision when the pain was too great.
Can you see a way to think about your current role differently that might improve your experience there?
What could it look like if you left? What fears do you have that would hold you back from leaving?
We review 10 areas to consider if you want to make a transition to determine if you are ready or if your aren’t what you can do to be ready. (p.s. Doing some of these might help you have a better experience where you are too!)
Have patience with yourself as you make this decision. It isn’t easy to do and you have to weigh our the pros and cons for your situation and your priorities.

Thursday Jun 01, 2023

65. Leveraging Opportunities to Show Your Value
Today’s episode is focused on how to leverage opportunities to show your value. When you look at the choices that you make every day, are you focused on doing the easy things that keep you in the background or the harder things that could put you into the spotlight? This isn’t always a conscious thought, but more than likely the easy things are what you already know and would be considered the safer choices.
Finding gaps, problems to solve and identifying solutions can be hard and that is why no one else is doing them. Choosing these harder options are giving you a way to stand out. They can help you be more visible and give you more career options. They are scarier to do and will require you to put yourself out there, but what if you did them well? What if people saw you in a new way because you tried doing them? Focus on doing something that pushes you out of your comfort zone and can provide so many more opportunities for you.
In this episode:
Are you staying safe or are you finding ways to put yourself out there in a bigger way?
Look for the problems that no one else is solving so you can stand out.
What can happen if you work on gaps, problems and solving them?
Taking the initiative to solve problems and gaps shows your management, your interest in building skills, and being ready for more.
Are you spending your time working on the high value things?
Take advantage of opportunities to build a bigger career for yourself.

Today we are talking about how to use networking to build connections and increase your visibility. I will be approaching this from both the in-person view as well as online. In this episode:
What networking is and why it is important.
How to use curiosity to help you to have networking conversations.
How introverts or anyone who is uncomfortable with networking can create a plan to execute.
What an informational interview is and some examples of questions that you can ask.
How to leverage LinkedIn to search for people to network with and reconnect with people who are already in your network but you haven’t spoken with recently.
